“We know that they are alive. As for the conditions, this issue is also monitored. We cannot say clearly under what conditions yet. But we know for sure that they are alive. The GUR is constantly monitoring this, with some of them there are connection, and the process of their release does not stop even for an hour. I really hope that it will enter its active phase, and we will begin to return our heroes to Ukraine,” Yermak said.

He noted that a press center has been set up in the intelligence center for prisoners. Both representatives of the Main Intelligence Directorate and those structures whose people are in captivity will participate in its work.

“Since negotiations and consultations are ongoing, every detail matters, the process is very difficult. I would not want to somehow harm this process with my words and information,” Yermak emphasized.

He added that the task at the first stage was to save the lives of the defenders of Azovstal, and it was fulfilled. Today they are engaged in the second stage – their return.

“The process of returning the bodies of our dead heroes has also begun. Today it is already more than 200,” the head of the President’s Office summed up.

Evacuation from Azovstal

After 82 days of defense, wounded Ukrainian soldiers who defended the Azovstal plant began to be evacuated from Mariupol, which was occupied by the invaders. The military command of Ukraine ordered to keep the personnel of the defenders. On the night of May 17 more than 250 military personnel were withdrawn from the humanitarian corridor to territories not controlled by Ukraine.

53 seriously wounded were evacuated to a medical facility in Novoazovsk for medical assistance. Another 211 people were taken to Yelenovka through the humanitarian corridor. Both settlements are in the occupied territory.

On May 20, Deputy Commander of the Azov Regiment Svyatoslav “Kalina” Palamar recorded a new video message to the Ukrainians. He stated that the command is still located on the territory of Azovstal in Mariupol. At the same time, the rescue operation continues.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that all civilians, doctors and the wounded were taken out of Azovstal. Now the evacuated defenders of Mariupol must be released under the exchange procedure. According to the head of state, the Ukrainian military received a signal that they have every right to go out and save their lives.

Soldier of the “Azov” regiment Dmitry Kozatsky, call sign “Orest”, posted on Twitter the latest photos from “Azovstal”. In the photo there is a mutilated metallurgical plant, which took the blow of the invaders.

Earlier we said that on the front line in the Zaporozhye region there was an exchange of bodies of dead soldiers between Ukraine and Russia. The procedure was carried out according to the formula “50 to 50”. Among the dead Ukrainian soldiers there are defenders of Azovstal.

Earlier we said that the bodies of another 58 dead Ukrainian defenders from Azovstal were brought to Kyiv. Earlier, there was an exchange of bodies of dead soldiers between Ukraine and Russia. According to preliminary data, four of them served in the Azov regiment. The bodies of the fallen soldiers will be buried in the Memorial to the fallen heroes of Azovstal.
