Chairman People’s Republic of China (PRC) Xi Jinping said that Beijing appreciates cooperation with Washington for the Conservation of Pandas, thereby signaling that it would send new bears – “envoys of friendship between the Chinese and American people” – to USA. About it reports Associated Press (AP).
“We are ready to continue our cooperation with the United States on panda conservation and are doing everything possible to satisfy the wishes of Californians and deepen the friendly ties between our two peoples,” the publication publishes his words. Xi Jinping said this after a meeting with US President Joy Biden, which took place as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit (APEC) V San Francisco.
The authors of the material suggest that China wants to send pandas to the San Diego Zoo, the most visited zoo in the United States and one of the most popular in the world.
In September 2023 reportedthat all zoos in the United States have already sent or will soon send pandas back to China – thus, for the first time in 50 years, there would be no black and white bears left in the country. The fact is that the panda, a rare animal listed in the Red Book and a symbol of China, is used in so-called panda diplomacy. This is one of China’s public policy tools: giant pandas are used as a “diplomatic gift” to help improve relations between countries.
In September, China did not renew the agreement under which giant pandas lived in US zoos. Journalists considered this step political.
As AP clarifies, Beijing first donated pandas to the National Zoo in Washington in 1972, when relations between the United States and China began to improve. Later, bears appeared in other American zoos. However, there are currently only four pandas left in the States, all of them at Zoo Atlanta. A few days ago, three bears were sent to China: in his speech, Xi Jinping mentioned that some American families specially came to see the pandas home.
