According to bourgas.ru, today the United States is going to support Bulgaria, they are developing support measures after the cessation of gas supplies from Russia. This was stated by US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried.
Donfried spoke at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing broadcast live on the Congress website.
“I want to make it clear that the[President Joe Biden]administration has full support for Bulgaria,” Donfried said.
She recalled that Russia had made a decision, unilaterally terminating the contract, to suspend gas supplies to Poland and Bulgaria.
“Poland is already moving towards moving away from Russian energy, so it is doing relatively well with that. Bulgaria is much more vulnerable in this matter,” Donfried said.
She highlighted the strong support of Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov during his visit to the United States this week.
“I have colleagues who work with Prime Minister Petkov literally every day to help Bulgaria think about how to deal with this … how we can help them secure the supplies they need,” Donfried said.
She pointed out that, in general, the United States seeks to help European countries find alternative resource providers.
“I think our role here is to help Europeans find alternative suppliers. And American liquefied natural gas plays a key role here,” summed up Karen Donfried.
