Ukraine intends to sharply accelerate the construction of nuclear reactors

Minister of Energy Ukraine German Galushchenko in the comments Reuters announced its intention to begin construction of four nuclear reactors in the summer or fall of this year. All of them will be located at the Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant.

At the same time, we are talking about a sharp acceleration in the implementation of plans. Before this, Galushchenko only said that work would begin in 2024, but did not specify that four blocks would be built at once.

It is assumed that two units, including reactors and related equipment, will be of Russian production. Their Kyiv going to import from Bulgaria. The manufacturer of two more units will be the American Westinghouse.

Since independence, Ukraine has built three new reactors – at the Zaporozhye, Khmelnytsky and Rivne nuclear power plants. At the same time, the construction of the third and fourth reactors at the Khmelnytsky NPP began, but was frozen back in the 1980s.

Currently Russia controls the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, energy from it does not flow into the Ukrainian energy system. Kyiv wants to compensate for the loss with new blocks. Galushchenko allocates 2.5 years for the construction of the third unit of the Khmelnitsky NPP, the rest will require more time. Before starting work, the ministry must obtain the approval of the Supreme Rada.

Previously Galushchenko statedthat Ukraine, in cooperation with Western countries, is increasing uranium production and plans to oust Russia from the world market.
