Eighth attempt to elect speaker of the lower house American congress was not successful. Republican Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy once again failed to get the 218 votes needed to win.
During the eighth ballot, 201 legislators supported his candidacy, 17 voted for Republican Party representative Byron Donalds, and three more votes went to other candidates. All 212 Democrats voted for their leader Hakim Jeffreys.
