According to bourgas.ru, in the last two years there is a real risk of a reduction in the number of nurses in Bulgaria by up to 60%, while there is now a shortage of nurses in UMBAL-Burgas. Now almost every department of UMBAL-Burgas lacks nurses.

“I chose to work with children, although it is very difficult. I chose this profession because there is a big shortage. I work extra shifts in other wards,” said Zornitsa Spasova, a nurse at UMBAL Burgas.

According to her, difficult working conditions and wages should be changed.

“The quota for more admission should be increased. Thus, the deficit will be eliminated,” added prof. Dr. Hristo Bozov, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Burgas.

The chairman of the board of the Bulgarian Association of Medical Workers, Milka Vasileva, said that there is currently an acute shortage of medical workers in the healthcare system, and not only nurses. Today in Bulgaria there are not enough midwives, paramedics, rehabilitators. According to her, the problem is very serious.

Milka Vasilyeva called for urgent steps to attract young people to the profession, including decent wages and improved working conditions.

“The average age of nurses is 54, but there are districts, such as Kyustendil, where the age is higher – 58. Currently, one nurse serves 30-40 patients,” summed up Milka Vasilyeva.
