The United States supported the inclusion of African countries in the UN Security Council

Blinken said the United States supports and approves reform of the UN Security Council to include African countries. “We believe that the Security Council should be more representative and include African voices,” the diplomat said.

In June 2023, US President Joe Biden instructed permanent representative to UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield to discuss the issue of reform of the UN Security Council. Six more states, including from Africa and Latin America, should receive permanent membership in the main UN body. At the same time, the United States does not plan to provide the new permanent members of the Security Council with the veto power that the current permanent members of the Security Council have.

Kremlin official representative Dmitry Peskov statedthat the UN Security Council needs transformation to improve the organization’s effectiveness. He added that negotiations on expansion will be long and difficult, but necessary.
