The Studenaya River in Kamchatka changed its course after the eruption of Klyuchevsky volcano and now threatens the local highway. This was announced by the head of the Ust-Kamchatka municipal district Oleg Bondarenko in his Telegram-channel.
According to the head of the district, the bed of the reservoir has returned to its natural direction and is negatively impacting the section of the regional highway between the villages of Kozyrevsk and Klyuchi. The changes were confirmed by the leading hydrologist of the Kamchatka Hydrometeorological Center.
“There is a lot of water coming. The leading hydrologist expressed serious concerns that accumulation of water is occurring at the foot of the road, and there is a high probability of a breakthrough and large masses of water entering the highway. He also added that it is necessary to come up with a structure to protect the road,” Bondarenko said.
He clarified that a regional-scale emergency zone has been expanded to the territory, which operates in the Ust-Kamchatka region due to a volcanic eruption. The authorities have already begun preparing a site for the deployment of special equipment, but there is less and less time to prevent a natural disaster amid rainfall and cold weather.
Klyuchevskoy volcano began erupting in June 2023, with activity intensifying in mid-October. On November 1, the volcanic eruption reached its climax – it threw out a series of ash columns up to 14 kilometers above sea level. Previously, due to the eruption of the Klyuchevskoy and Bezymyanny volcanoes blocked part of the Milkovo – Klyuchi – Ust-Kamchatsk highway.
