The national system of higher education will have to replace the Bologna Process, which Russia joined in September 2003. But all these years, we still had a specialty, which provides for studying at a university for 5-6 years.

As Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov stated, the Ministry of Education and Science is completing the formation of the national system. She will respond more national interest, inquiries of applicants and their parents. Falkov explained in an interview with the Russia-24 TV channel that the point is that applicants will have more opportunities when receiving higher education. But at the same time, universities will also have more freedom, including in determining the terms of study. According to the minister, one of the things that can be discussed is the reduction of the terms of study in the master’s program from 2 years to 1 year in such areas as IT, engineering and others.

Recall that at the end of May, Valery Falkov said that the Bologna educational process should be treated as lived stage. He also said then that the future unique national education system will be based on the interests of the Russian economy and the maximum space of opportunities for each student. In June it became known that all Russian universities expelled from the Bologna process. To which Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Dmitry Afanasiev said: this declaration is not an agreement and should not be broken, “it was the Bologna system that came out of us, not we out of it.”

It is worth adding that the Bologna education system is named after the Italian city of Bologna, where the corresponding declaration was signed at the local university in 1999. The document represents the concept of a unified standard for higher education under the 3+2+3 scheme – bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies (we have postgraduate studies). At the same time, the Bologna process assumed precisely the system of higher education, and not international cooperation in this area.
