The IAEA announced the danger of a major nuclear accident at Zaporizhia NPP

“The plant’s six reactors have been shut down since mid-2022—five of them in cold shutdown mode and one in hot shutdown mode. However, the potential danger of a major nuclear accident remains very real,” he said.

According to the agency’s general director, the situation with safety and nuclear protection at Zaporizhzhya NPP remains unstable. He added that despite the long absence of shelling at the power plant, military operations continue in the region, sometimes taking place in the immediate vicinity of the facility.

According to him, IAEA staff report that missiles are flying overhead near the station, which threatens the physical integrity of the station.

During his speech, Rafael Grossi also statedwhich the IAEA did not see on Ukraine use of nuclear materials at the front. He emphasized that the organization continues to work to verify compliance with security guarantees throughout Ukraine.
