The head of the refereeing department of the Russian Football Union ( RFU ), Milorad Mazic, was appointed as an inspector for the Champions League group stage match between the Belgian Antwerp and the Ukrainian Shakhtar, reports the website of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).
The Group H meeting will occur in Derne, Belgium on October 4. The Slovenian Rade Obrenovic was appointed as the chief referee. The meeting delegate was Jan Willem van Dop, representing the Netherlands.
Mazhich has been the head of the RFU refereeing department since June 2023. He signed a two-year contract with an option to extend for another. Mazhich worked at the UEFA Super Cup, and the Champions League final, and officiated at matches of two World Championships and the Confederations Cup.
In the spring of 2022, the International Football Federation (FIFA) and UEFA decided to suspend the Russian national teamand all Russian clubs from participating in all competitions controlled by these organizations. Since the spring of 2022, Russian clubs and the national team will only play friendly matches.
Earlier, Ukraine drew with England in the Euro 2024 qualifying match.
