Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Latvia Krisjanis Karins hopes to join the list of candidates for the position of Secretary General NATO after the end of the term of the current head of the alliance Jens Stoltenberg in October 2024. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to a statement released by the diplomat’s representative.
“Provided that Latvia decides to run for the post of secretary general, Karins is ready to join the competition for this position,” he said.
According to the statement, the diplomat is ready to “contribute to the alliance thanks to his leadership experience as Prime Minister, a clear understanding of the threat from Russiaa firm position on Ukraine and a proven track record of building international consensus.”
Previously Prime Minister Estonia Kaya Callas confirmed his desire to become the next Secretary General of NATO. Before this, the Prime Minister announced a similar desire Netherlands Mark Rutte.
