More than a third of Russians (35%) believe that the Sun revolves around the Earth, and not vice versa. Sociologists of the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion (VTsIOM) spoke about this.
The correct answer, that the Earth revolves around the Sun, was given by only 61% of the respondents. Respondents were also asked if it is true that the Earth makes a complete revolution around the Sun in one month. The correct answer “no” was given by 69% of respondents. 12% of respondents agreed with this statement. Another 19% found it difficult to answer.
The greatest controversy was caused by issues related to products with GMOs. When asked if they cause cancer, 44% answered positively, 35% negatively. 21% of respondents found it difficult to answer. When asked whether such products can defeat hunger on the planet, more than half (55%) answered negatively, 32% positively, another 13% found it difficult to answer.
It also turned out that every fifth respondent (21%) believes that the first people lived at the same time as the dinosaurs. Know that it is not so, 66% of respondents. According to the results of the survey, VTsIOM identified three groups according to the level of scientific literacy: 21% have it low, 44% have medium, and 35% have high.
The group with a high level of scientific literacy is dominated by young people (61%), almost half (49%) of people from this group are active Internet users, 45% of this group have higher education, more than half (51%) live in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg.
The all-Russian telephone survey “VTsIOM-Sputnik” was held on July 9, 2022 among 1600 Russians aged 18 years and older. The data are weighted by socio-demographic parameters. The marginal error with a probability of 95% does not exceed 2.5%.
