Russian Railways proposed an idea that could stimulate the transportation of containers in gondola cars from the Far East. This can be achieved by raising by 51% the tariff for empty runs of wagons from the stations of the region. The material about this was published by Kommersant. The journalists referred to the text of the letter of the Deputy General Director of Russian Railways Alexei Shilo dated December 2.
Representatives of JSC Russian Railways told the agency that a measure to increase tariffs for empty run of gondola cars from the stations of the Far Eastern Railway (FER) is currently under consideration. They called such a step forced. Also, Russian Railways stressed that such a measure is designed to have a positive impact on the growth in the share of return loading of gondola cars. This can be done by attracting containers in the directions “West-East” and “East-West”.
The interlocutor of journalists, associated with one of the large operator companies, shared information that the initiative of the Russian Railways could cause a decrease in the speed of the network, as well as cause a shortage of cars in the loading regions. In addition, he predicted that the expected growth in container shipments will not happen.
After talking with other sources, the journalists found out that the company’s desire to increase its own revenues may be the main reason for the increase in tariffs. At the same time, the very idea of tariff growth does not correlate with the initiative to attract gondola cars and increase the volume of containers from the eastern direction.
Earlier, the Public News Service reported that Russia had collected a record party grain in bunker weight – more than 159 million tons. The Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Dmitry Patrushev also said that thanks to the abundant range of products, Russia managed to fully saturate the domestic market.
