“Peering Forum MSK-IX 2022”, organized by MSK-IX for the 17th time, was held in Moscow on Friday, December 9th.
This is an annual conference dedicated to communication networks, as well as services and services that are provided with their help. After a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year the event was again held in person and brought together more than 500 participants.
After a forced break, members of the peer-to-peer community, representatives of IT and media companies, network service providers and data center operators have once again gathered together in one place to discuss the most pressing issues of the industry, share news and exchange experiences.
The conference was opened by Advisor to the General Director of MSK-IX Elena Voronina. Not only has she led the company since its founding in 1995, but she also created the Peering Forum, a platform that brings together hundreds of professionals in the online community, providing them with the opportunity to exchange opinions, share best practices and share unique case studies.
In April of this year, Elena Voronina transferred her powers as the General Director of MSK-IX Evgeny Morozov, which continued the solemn part of the conference. He greeted all participants of the event, recalling that this year the company is already 27 years old, most of which it celebrates with its friends, partners and clients, summing up the results of the year with them at the Peering Forum. Then Evgeny Morozov set the tone for the event, outlining the main trends and challenges in 2022 in the IT and telecom industries, and briefly spoke about new projects of MSK-IX and announced the most interesting topics of the forum’s speeches.
The CEO of Rostelecom-DPC addressed the conference participants with a welcoming speech Sergei Bochkarev. He thanked the MSK-IX team for their contribution to the development of the Internet infrastructure and the base for building network services.
The Peering Forum program consisted of six thematic streams.
Of particular interest to the audience was the stream “Network Services” and the panel discussion that took place within its framework, the participants of which were the director of the cybersecurity department of the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation Vladimir BenginDeputy Head of the Cyber Defense Center of Sberbank Alexey KachalinOperations Director VK Alexey BazhinGeneral Director of Ru Center Andrey Kuzmichev and Head of the Department of Advanced Research, NPK Kryptonit Vasily Dolmatov. The discussion was moderated by the General Director of the “Technical Center Internet” Alexey Rogdev. The experts discussed the specifics of organizing business processes under sanctions, issues of cybersecurity and import substitution in the telecom industry. Also, attention was paid to the topic of interaction between the state and business in the field of regulation of the certification market.
Within the flow “Connection and Point” Head of Sales at MSK-IX Oksana Antipenko spoke in detail about the new features of the MSK-IX multiservice platform for secure traffic exchange. Project Director MSK-IX “Medialogistics” Grigory Kuzin devoted his report to the main challenges faced this year – ensuring the security of television signal delivery, maintaining and expanding the range of TV channels, as well as curbing price increases. All of them were successfully dealt with.
Oksana and Grigory also awarded key partners of the company, noting their contribution to the stable development of the network infrastructure and numerous services built on its basis.
session “Infrastructure” opened by MSK-IX CTO Alexander Ilyin, who noted that network security has become an important topic of the past year. He gave examples of specific solutions and gave recommendations for its implementation.
R&D engineer at Qrator Labs Evgeny Bogomazov developed this idea, talking about the fact that since the beginning of 2022, about 4.5 thousand leaks of traffic routes have been recorded and about creating a solution that will effectively deal with them. Yandex Network Expert Alexander Azimov shared interesting information about the complex mechanisms of traffic delivery.
Flow “Medialogistics” was devoted to topical issues and market development trends at the intersection of media and telecom. Within its framework, two panel discussions were held on the most notable trends in 2022: content import substitution and entry into the market of smart TVs under the brands of domestic operators of digital ecosystems – Yandex, Kion, Sber and Tricolor, which occupied the niche of Korean vendors that left Russia.
The participants of the session – well-known analysts and representatives of leading companies in the media and telecom industry – noted that we will see the main volume of eastern content from countries such as Iran, India, Turkey and others, which will replace Western products, as early as next year, because it takes time to adapt. And the new smart TVs from Russian manufacturers will not only seriously compete with Chinese brands, but will also be in great demand among domestic consumers, due to the fact that they are an important part of the digital ecosystems popular in the country.
The flow ended with the presentation by Grigory Kuzin of the new MSK-IX platform, which was called Mediabaza. It is a B2B platform for the distribution of downloadable content, which can be used by producers to find buyers, as well as broadcasters and online services that want to add new programs to their range.
Flow “Open Internet” was dedicated to the development of the worldwide network and ensuring its stable operation on the territory of Russia. Director for External Relations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, RIPE NCC Coordinating Center Maxim Burtikov said that the work of the organization is based on the idea of the principle of the Internet, based on trust and collaboration. He noted the importance of the infrastructure integrity of the Internet, regardless of the political situation. Deputy Technical Director for Network Infrastructure IVI Sergey Mitin devoted his report to the peculiarities of using the IPv6 protocol by content players, emphasizing that at the moment it is used more by operators than by content providers. Selectel CTO Kirill Malevanov discussed the topic of optimizing Internet connectivity for cloud providers, describing examples of building traffic management processes to ensure the best connectivity of Internet connections for end users.
cross-cutting theme “Peer-to-Peer Forum” this year was information security. It is not surprising that the panel discussion, which took place in the stream of the same name, riveted the attention of the audience. Its moderator is the chief architect of strategic projects of Positive Technologies Mikhail Kader – discussed with industry representatives the growth dynamics of DDoS attacks on Russian Internet resources and their impact on traffic redistribution and network connectivity. In general, despite the fact that the number of DDos attacks in the first quarter of 2022 increased three times compared to the same period in 2021, this did not have a significant impact on network connectivity and did not cause significant damage, thanks to the successful counteraction by specialists on information security.
