President of Russia Vladimir Putin instructed Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu to establish a ceasefire along the entire line of contact in Ukraine from 12:00 January 6 to 24:00 January 7. This was reported by the Kremlin press service on Thursday, January 5.

The Kremlin called on the Ukrainian side to follow the example of Moscow and suspend hostilities.

“Based on the fact that a large number of citizens professing Orthodoxy live in the combat areas, we call on the Ukrainian side to declare a ceasefire and give them the opportunity to attend services on Christmas Eve, as well as on the Day of the Nativity of Christ,” the message reads.

Recall that earlier Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill urged establish a Christmas truce in Ukraine and Donbass for a period of 36 hours. According to him, this initiative would allow Orthodox people to freely attend Christmas services.

At the same time, in the office of the President of Ukraine called “cynical trap” Patriarch Kirill’s call for a truce on Christmas Day.
