Politico: Borrell’s statements forced EU diplomats to make excuses
Borrell led to the fact that the diplomats of the association had to justify themselves and apologize, the newspaper Politico reports, citing three anonymous diplomats.
According to the publication, in October of this year, Borrell announced agreement among European ministers on the issue of suspending hostilities to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims. However, reaching a consensus required several days of negotiations among senior officials.
As a result, the Secretary General of the EU External Action Service Stefano Sannino had to explain himself to EU representatives due to the fact that Borrell announced the existence of a consensus ahead of time.
“One EU diplomat described Sannino’s intervention as a ‘way of apologizing’ for Borrell’s remarks, while two other diplomats saw it as more of an explanation than a full apology,” the report said.
There is growing hostility towards the head of EU diplomacy after premature statements.
It was previously reported that the United States is opposing action by the UN Security Council to allow Israel to continue military operations in the Gaza Strip. Read more about this in material Public News Service.
