Political scientist Sotnikov: The US and Iran will try to avoid direct confrontation

The United States and Iran will try to avoid direct confrontation until the last moment against the backdrop of Washington’s attacks and the aggressive actions of pro-Iranian groups in the Middle East. This was stated by HSE Associate Professor Vladimir Sotnikov, writes RIA Novosti.

Let us recall that previously information was received that a group of US military personnel was killed due to a missile attack on a military base in Syria. Later, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin informed that Washington had struck targets of the Iranian IRGC and pro-Iranian groups in eastern Syria in response to the death of its fighters.

“I think that the Americans will try to avoid direct conflict. If this conflict really did arise, it would very quickly escalate, it would be extensive – this is not profitable for the Americans now. So far the situation is such that the United States is not going to change the status quo,” the specialist expressed his point of view.

Sotnikov did not rule out that instead of a full-fledged conflict, America hopes to gradually eliminate pro-Iranian groups and Shiite armed formations, however, Tehran has set the same goal for itself, but against the American military.

Earlier, the UN Secretary General called on Iran to help with the release of hostages in Gaza. More about this read the material Public News Service.
