Alexander Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals beat New York Rangers 4-0 in an NHL game

The Washington Capitals of Alexander Ovechkin beat the New York Rangers of Artemy Panarin on the road and won the fifth victory in a row. Dmitry Orlov hit the stands with a tough power move on his compatriot Vitaly Kravtsov, and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored an assist.

“Capital” scored a great move in December and pleased their fans in the first match after Christmas. Already in the first period, the Caps forced two Rangers players to get sent off one after the other and for some time played a five-on-three powerplay, which quickly resulted in a goal.

The most important role in this was played by the Russian striker Evgeny Kuznetsov: he delivered a powerful throw from the left circle of the face-off – the goalkeeper of the “Rangers” Igor Shesterkin hardly repelled the puck, and then Markus Johansson pushed the projectile into the goal from the patch (1: 0).

Thus, in the last three matches, Kuznetsov scored four points – a goal and three assists.

This statistic could have been even more impressive if Anthony Manta had converted the one-on-one exit that the Russian gave him. Kuznetsov, standing with his back to the goal and not looking at his partner at all, beautifully threw the puck between the opponent’s legs, leaving the entire Rangers defense in the cold.

After that, Manta jumped out to a rendezvous with Shesterkin, but could not lift the puck over his shield.

However, even such offensive misfires did not affect the mood of “Washington”. At the end of the second period, the Capitals scored two goals in two minutes, practically burying the hopes of the New Yorkers for a comeback.

And in the 57th minute, Conor Shiri put an end to the match by sending the puck into an empty net.

At the same time, it cannot be said that the Russian goalkeeper of the Rangers, Igor Shesterkin, showed himself poorly. On the contrary, he was the only bright spot in the Blueshirts’ game, whose offense failed to come up with anything in 60 minutes on the home floor, failing miserably on five powerplay attempts.

Shesterkin’s save after the release of Manta one on one we have already seen. Also, the Russian did not allow Johansson to complete a double: the Swede brought the puck into an empty corner from half a meter, but Shesterkin managed to put his hand out and beat the projectile to the side with a glove.

The Rangers goalkeeper tried so hard that even the post stood on his side. So, 23-year-old defender of “Washington” Alexander Alekseev already in the second minute of the match was close to his first goal in the NHL, but from a few meters, he hit the crossbar.

Bright impressions were also given to the audience by the more experienced defender of “Washington” Dmitry Orlov. The 31-year-old hockey player grabbed the scruff of the neck and threw the young Rangers striker Vitaly Kravtsov onto the ice. For this reception from MMA, Orlov did not even receive a two-minute removal. Fortunately, Kravtsov was not seriously injured.

Alexander Ovechkin, who in the last match surpassed the achievement of the great Gordie Howe and became the only pursuer of Wayne Gretzky in the race of the best NHL snipers, was just relaxing on the ice in this match. And no wonder – after such and such stormy celebrations. The Great Eight landed only one shot on target and had three power moves.
