The European Union and NATO intend to publish a joint declaration on Ukraine, in which the West will call on Russia to withdraw its troops. According to military expert Yuri Knutovthis document is being prepared for two purposes.
Firstly, the West wants to put pressure on Moscow and demonstrate that the New Year truce will not. Secondly, the North Atlantic Alliance intends to show other EU countries that call for negotiations that a diplomatic settlement conflict should not be expected.
“In general, I think that talks about some section are more provocative. If Russia goes for it, it will show weakness,” the historian added in an interview with the Public News Service.
Knutov believes that the forthcoming declaration is a signal for Russia.
“The West will not restore normal relations and will not stop the sanctions pressure. Russia will not gain anything. Our country was deceived with the non-expansion of NATO, and then with the Minsk agreements,” he said.
