Ukrainian politician Viktor Medvedchuk, as well as five commanders of the Azov Regiment*, were handed over during the largest prisoner exchange held between representatives of the Russian and Ukrainian sides. This happened in September 2022, the exchange took place in Ankara. Hurriyet writes about this, citing information from its own sources.
As the journalists managed to find out, the negotiations on the exchange were held at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Organization Turkey. Media interviewees said that Russia set a condition according to which the transferred Azov fighters * had to remain in Turkey. Ukraine agreed.
On the day when the exchange was scheduled, two planes from Russia and Ukraine arrived at Ankara airport. There were no problems during the exchange process.
“The Azov commanders* have been in Turkey since that time as its guests. Both sides do not violate the agreements, ”sources shared with reporters.
Formerly Public News Service informedthat the leader of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadryrov, made a statement that the Russian Federation should not conduct an exchange of prisoners with the Kyiv regime in the framework of the “all for all” format. He argued that Ukraine should feel how heavy the burden it will have to bear.
