New Year holidays are a time of desires, hopes and expectations. Most Russians these days will delight relatives and friends with surprises. However, opinions are divided: some believe that only children need gifts, others are not going to give them at all.

From December 1 to December 5, 2022, experts from the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM) conducted an online survey with the participation of 1,662 adult Russians in all districts of the country to find out their attitude to the long-standing tradition of making New Year gifts to relatives, friends and colleagues.
The vast majority of respondents (86%) are going to please loved ones with gifts for the New Year. Of these, 64% intend to give them not only to children, but also to adults. Although only one in five Russians (20%) consider it mandatory, and one in nine (11%) consider it not so important.
However, in different regions of the country the attitude to this New Year tradition is different. For example, residents of the Urals Federal District consider it their duty to make all their loved ones happy with gifts, regardless of their age – 72 percent of the Urals think so.
Meanwhile, in the Far Eastern District, a third of the Russians surveyed (32%) insist that it is expedient to give gifts only to children. And 17% of respondents living in the North Caucasian Federal District are convinced that New Year’s gifts can be avoided altogether.
Of those Russians who decide to give gifts for the New Year, almost every second (46%) will contribute to the festive table in the form of some expensive or scarce treat. Conditionally the second most popular will be various accessories associated with New Year’s symbols – 26 percent.
Next come developing gifts (books, concert tickets, etc.), household appliances, gifts for spending time together (board games, tour packages, etc.) – 21, 20 and 18 percent, respectively.
