This is evidenced by the data of the study of the National Statistical Institute “Statistics of Income and Living Conditions (EU-SILC)”.
According to the survey, in 2021 the poverty line in the Burgas region is on average 507.67 leva per month per household member. With this size of the line, 25.2% of the district’s population were below the poverty line.
Compared to the previous year, the size of the poverty line both in the region and in the country increased by 11.8%, and the proportion of the poor in the region decreased by 3.8%.
In the Burgas region, the relative share of poverty is 23.5% for men and 26.8% for women. The difference in the poverty rate between the sexes is 3.3% compared to 3.6% in the country (men – 20.3% and women – 23.9%). Compared to 2020, in the Burgas region, the proportion of the poor among men and women decreased by 3.8%.
Data for 2021 for the Burgas region show that if household income includes pensions but excludes other social benefits, the poverty rate increases from 25.2% to 34.2%, or 9.0%.
Accordingly, excluding pensions and other social payments, the poverty level in the region increased to 48.3%, or 23.1%.
In 2021, the highest poverty line in the district of Sofia (capital) is BGN 733, with a poverty rate of 22.5%, and the lowest in the poverty line in Vidin districts is BGN 343 and Montana is BGN 355, with a poverty rate of 23.0 % and 29.4% respectively. In 2021, the Burgas region ranks 7th in the country in terms of the poverty line – BGN 508. after the Stara Zagora region (514 levs) and before the Varna region (506 levs). In 2020, the district also ranked 7th with 454 leva.
In 2021, 8.9 thousand people aged 18-64, or 3.9% of the population, live in households with a low intensity of economic activity, and compared to 2020, their share is reduced by 4.2%.
The 2013 Income and Living Conditions Survey collected data on the material deprivation of children in households (ages 1-15).
In 2021, in the Burgas region, the relative proportion of children with material deprivation (deprived of at least one of the 13 indicators) is 44.9%, and for 4.5% of children, the need cannot be met for financial reasons.
In 2021, 50.5% of children live without material deprivation.
