On this day in 1945, the most bloody war ended.

On this day, but in 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman read out his famous declaration calling on France and Germany to create a joint organization to control the production of coal and steel, which were considered at that time the key sectors of the economy in the military industry.

The Declaration is also the first step towards the creation of the European Union. Schuman proposed the creation of a supranational European institution to govern the coal and steel industries, a sector at the time at the center of military power. In practice, Robert Schuman presents his proposal for a united Europe, popularly known as the “Shuman Declaration”, for the beginning of the EU.

In 1985, at a meeting of EU leaders in Milan, it was decided to celebrate May 9 as Europe Day. Since then and to this day, this date symbolizes the desire for unity, peace and prosperity in Europe.

Bulgaria has been celebrating Europe Day since 2005.
On January 1, 2007 Bulgaria became a full member of the European Union.
