The countries of the European Union intend to grant Ukraine a status candidate for admission June 23-24. At a meeting of EU ambassadors on June 20, no one objected to this move.
About it informs Bloomberg.
The EU leaders’ summit is to be held on June 23-24. As expected, during it, an important decision for Ukraine will be announced.
After obtaining the status of a candidate for EU accession, Ukraine must fulfill a number of conditions in order to meet all the requirements for EU accession:
- legislate the procedure for appointing judges to the Supreme Court,
- strengthen the fight against corruption,
- adopt laws against money laundering and oligarchy,
- exclude media bias by bringing its legislation in this area with European standards,
- complete legal reforms on the rights of national minorities.
In addition, the bloc also intends to support the opinion of the European Commission on granting status to a candidate for Moldova, as well as Georgia, if it first fulfills certain additional conditions.
The European Commission supported the status of an EU candidate for Ukraine
Ukraine officially recommended to grant status candidate for EU membership. This decision was made by the European Commission on June 17 in Brussels.
The European Commission made a decision with reservations that granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership contains conditions that Kyiv will have to fulfill. These conditions fall within the realm of the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
Granting EU candidate status means that Ukraine will have to make a series of reforms to meet the criteria and then get approval from all 27 countries in the bloc.
