Purpose of deflectors
The efficiency of the ventilation systems depends on the correct installation (if you bring the outlet of the ventilation duct to an insufficient height relative to the ridge of the roof, the ventilation will not work). And from atmospheric conditions, since the circulation of air flows is regulated not only by the lifting force (arises as a result of the temperature difference outside-inside the building), but also by the pressure and force of the wind.
The latter can speed up circulation, or, conversely, slow it down. Deflectors can partially neutralize the negative effect of the wind.
This is a prefabricated module consisting of glasses (a diffuser and a cylinder fastener for attaching to a ventilation pipe), an umbrella – a protective cap, a shell – the visible part of the deflector connected to the diffuser.
The first is protection from small debris, insects, birds, rain, and snow getting into the ventilation ducts.
The second is an increase in the service life of ventilation pipes. Without protection, small dirt particles settle on the walls of the ventilation ducts, reducing the diameter of the pipe itself, reducing the throughput.
The third is an increase in the thrust force (air circulation) by an average of 20%, a decrease in the risk of backdraft when the exhaust air is returned to the building through the ventilation ducts.
The TsAGI deflector is a universal model designed by the Aerodynamic Institute. It works on the principle of increasing traction due to wind pressure and pressure difference – the deflector “catches” the wind, air passing through the diffuser reduces the pressure at the outlet of the ventilation duct. As a result of a decrease in pressure, the exhaust air rises up the ventilation pipe.
Of the advantages – resistance to high temperatures, an increase in the efficiency of the ventilation duct by 20%, protection of ventilation outlets from precipitation. Of the minuses – TsAGI is practically useless in calm, windless weather, frost can accumulate on the walls of the shell in winter.
Umbrellas – caps of various shapes (from simple cones riveted at the junction) to decorative, made of steel with polymer, powder coated on rack legs attached to the base.
The former are usually placed on chimneys to protect against precipitation, sparks on the roofing. They also protect the pipes from the ingress of debris, insects, small birds (often an additional mesh is placed on the base).
Among the advantages are the price, simple installation, a slight increase in traction force (in calm weather, it is also useless, like TsAGI). Of the minuses – umbrellas are usually made of steel with a thickness of 0.45-0.5 mm. The metal quickly burns out (it depends, of course, on how often the stove is heated) within a couple of years.
