On May 7, Prime Minister of Dagestan Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov took part in the interregional scientific and practical seminar “Efficiency of cross-breeding of meat sheep.”

Recall that in Dagestan over the past few years, on the initiative of Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov, work has begun on interbreeding of sheep to obtain a new type with increased meat indicators. The goal was to create animals that would differ from the Dagestan breed in their increased meat qualities. For this, rams of the breed “Russian meat merino” are used.

Opening the event, Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov greeted the guests from Kalmykia and Moscow on behalf of the Head of the Republic of Dagestan Sergey Melikov.

He noted that the main topic of discussion is the effectiveness of interbreeding. Such work began to be carried out several years ago jointly on the basis of the Kalmyk Research Institute and the Sogratl agricultural firm, a branch of the Agricultural Federal Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The key goal is to preserve and improve the meat qualities of the Dagestan mountain breed of sheep through selection and breeding work, increasing the number of livestock of this type of sheep, which is most adapted to the natural and climatic conditions of the region.

On the basis of the agrofirm, the livestock is kept – this is a cross between the first and second generation, which was obtained by crossing the rams of the Russian meat merino breed with the uterus of the Dagestan mountain breed. Experiments have been going on for several years, the results are encouraging. The first generations of the crossbred livestock of the Russian merino meat and the Dagestan mountain breed of sheep demonstrate good meat and wool qualities, and also retain the necessary body constitution, which makes it possible to successfully withstand the conditions of the mountain-transhumant keeping system.

The interest of scientists from other regions in the selection and breeding work carried out here is partly due to the fact that in parallel, in the farms of neighboring Kalmykia, experiments are being carried out on crossing the queens of the Dagestan mountain breed of sheep with rams-producers of the Dorper and Charolais breeds.

Head of the Department of Private Animal Science of the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Agricultural Academy. K.A. Timiryazeva, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Yusupzhan Yuldashbaev noted that in the introductory crossing, the Russian meat merino breed was used, which perfectly combines the good qualities of wool and is distinguished by high meat qualities.

“On average, the bred breed gives 20-25% more meat than the original mother breed of sheep. Today, during a visit to the Sogratl agricultural company, we saw the difference between the original breed and the new type being created.

Dagestan is distinguished by the fact that it has its own system of keeping sheep – mountain-transhumance. And the distillation is carried out not in the steppe, but in the mountains for a period of up to 30 days. This is a very long transition, so sheep must have a strong hoof horn, endurance, and adaptability for these conditions. The new type of sheep should not lose all these qualities, while maintaining increased meat productivity,” Yuldbashev explained.

According to Anatoly Arilov, director of the Kalmyk Research Institute of Agriculture, a branch of the Caspian Agrarian Federal Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the idea of interbreeding in order to improve meat qualities is one of the hot topics in sheep breeding.

“The reason why we chose Dagestan is that the region is among the leaders in the number of sheep. Huge work has already been done in the republic to improve the meat qualities of the Dagestan rock.

It should also be noted that on the basis of the Kalmyk Scientific Research Agricultural Institute, together with Dagestan scientists, work is underway to cross the Dagestan rock and the African Dorper breed. We have purchased a certain number of Dorper rams, they are located at the base of our institute, and last year we brought breeding stock from Dagestan. The other day we received the first generation of these animals. It is very good when two advanced republics in sheep breeding carry out joint scientific work.

In the future, we want to create a new type that will retain maternal qualities that animals will acquire in more adapted conditions in Kalmykia and Dagestan. Today we noted that the volume of work is increasing, so we will attract additional research institutes from nearby regions,” Arilov said.

Based on the results of the work, the desired type of a new breed of sheep will be determined, which will be used for mass breeding in the farms of the regions.
