The biggest challenge in filming Oppenheimer was recreating the Trinity tests without the use of CGI. This was told in an interview with Total Film magazine by director Christopher Nolan.
According to him, this was done thanks to the work of visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson. “The head of our effects team, whom I approached in advance, was always looking for how to make the most of the visual elements of the film in practical ways,” admitted the director.
The original plan was to create not an ordinary biopic, but a subjective story from the point of view of the central character, the physicist Robert Oppenheimer, who led the Manhattan Project. “That’s the challenge I set for Cillian Murphy, that’s the challenge I set for cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema, for my designer, for my entire team,” says Nolan.
In an interview with reporters, he also stressed that Oppenheimer is one of the most complex and large-scale projects in his filmography. But now, according to the cinematographer, he is “delighted” with the work.
Oppenheimer is expected to be released in summer 2023. The plot of the picture is based on the book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.” Currently, work on the project is ongoing.
