The main source of daily information about those infected with coronavirus in St. Petersburg is the Stopcoronavirus government website. There publish official data, which almost all media refer to.

In addition, extended data on the structure of the incidence of COVID-19 publish on the Smolny website. There you can find out how many hospitals are working with coronavirus at the moment, how many beds are deployed and how many are occupied, as well as how many people are on outpatient treatment.

Theoretically, the Stopcoronavirus data should show how many cases of infection were detected per day, but the methodology, at least in the first waves, did not take into account a number of fundamental points during the increase in the incidence. For example, number limit tests for COVID-19 for district physicians, which was introduced due to the heavy workload of laboratories in the winter of 2020. Some tests, as doctors said at the time, were not immediately sent to the laboratory, which means that their results could be included in the statistics with a delay. In addition, some demographers and experts in statistics indicate on the ability to manipulate numbers, referring to the smoothness of growth and the absence of “jumps” during a plateau or decline.

For a better understanding of the situation, demographers and statistical researchers recommend paying attention to the number of those who are sent to coronavirus hospitals. However, there are no statistics on hospitalizations for the first waves, and during the third wave, in the summer of 2021, the authorities ceased publish this data without giving reasons. It is known that in December 2020, as well as at the end of June 2021, about 1,000 people per day were sent to hospitals. The authorities have been publishing permanent statistics since August 3, 2021.

The official mortality data, which is published daily in the media, also initially appears on Stopcoronavirus. There fall deaths in which COVID-19 was identified as the underlying cause.

Petersburg, the number of new deaths recorded in statistics consider by the number of issued certificates. They are discharged by a hospital, dispensary or clinic a day after the cause of death is established by a pathologist. Due to the workload of pathologists, at some points there may be delays in daily counting and “shifting” of data on lethal outcomes from one day to another.

Not all deaths of people with COVID-19 that are recorded in Russia are included in the Stopcoronavirus statistics: there is also a classification of deaths, where the infection is indicated as a secondary cause that did not affect death.

For a more accurate picture, demographers recommend pay attention to excess mortality, which is calculated according to the data of the registry office, and data on deaths, where the coronavirus was indicated as the main and secondary cause, which are published by Rosstat. This data less efficientbut more accurate, experts say, and often higher than official statistics.

Update. The website of the registry office of St. Petersburg has not published new data on mortality since November 2020.

The daily statistics of those who have recovered from the coronavirus in St. Petersburg do not reflect the real situation, researchers say. it recognized even in the city health committee.

Due to the heavy workload, hospitals may do not write off any of the recovered on time. Recovery also has vague criteria: for example, it is not clear at what stage a person ceases to be sick. Until the fall of 2020, officially the Komzdrav thought recovered people who got two negative test results in a row, but not all of the sick people did. From 2021, to be considered officially recovered, it is enough to get a negative result of one test.

It is on the official information about the recovered that the data on the number of active patients, that is, those still ill with coronavirus, in St. Petersburg are built, which casts doubt on the accuracy of these numbers. At the same time, there is no more correct data on the recovered than on Stopcoronavirus. But in some countries they believe that they are not needed: for example, in France and the UK, the statistics of those who have recovered do not lead.
