Scientists from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have presented a patch for the treatment of herniated discs that is activated when the patient moves. Research results published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
At the moment, there is no complete method for treating intervertebral disc herniation; doctors can only offer patients temporary supportive measures. A new development called TARPS can fill a crack or hole in the disc between the vertebrae, restoring their proper functioning. In addition, TARPS sequentially releases the anti-inflammatory drug anakinra protein from the microcapsules. By filling the damage cavities, the patch prevents increased pain associated with intervertebral disc degeneration.
So far, the technology has been tested on animals for a month. In the future, they plan to continue testing over a longer period in larger animal models.
In January 2022, researchers from China identifiedthat back pain can be a symptom of many dangerous diseases: heart attack, acute nephritis and osteoporosis.
